Zoom Room

If your cramped urban dwelling is forcing you to choose between designated sleeping quarters and a full-on media room, fret no more.

You can have both with Zoom-Room, an electronic version of the Murphy bed.

“The Standard” is a Stand Out!

Zoom-Room–my all-time-favorite wall bed that’s light years ahead of a Murphy bed–recently introduced its new line of pre-manufactured high-quality wall bed cabinets. And similar to the custom-designed Zoom-Room beds, they snake out of the wall and into the room with the click of a button. “The Standard,” as the line is called, is far from ordinary. Its wall bed cabinets are available in three finishes, a deep Espresso, Basic White, or the airy Bank Alder, and several modular configurations.

The center panel can be used for a flat screen TV, a painting, or whatever you’d like. And depending on how you choose to configure the adjustable shelving or hanging rods, the optional left and right side cabinets can store clothes, books, or be used to show off your art collection or high-tech stereo system.

What’s so groovy about all this, you ask? Well, these choices allow you to use “The Standard” in your home entertainment center, spare guest room, office, or living room. And with prices starting at just $4,450, this means ordinary consumers, like you and me, can now afford these stylish electronic, remote controlled, retractable beds, making each of us as sexy as James Bond!

Clearing Clutter

home_coffeetable2

It doesn’t take much for a small space to feel cluttered, especially in an age where we have more gadgets than ever clamoring for use in our lives. That’s why the @home Coffee Table by designer Philippe Barsol is not only stylish but useful, as it succeeds in incorporating our plethora of necessary gadgets into home décor.

Now you can have a home office work space that doubles as a cocktail table—-right in the living room. Movable, hinged drawers open and can be raised to use or hide a laptop, memory stick, external hard drive, remote controls, cameras, a cell phone, or any other paraphernalia that would otherwise make a simple space seem messy. Cocktails, anyone?

Suspended Animation

Thanks to the hi-tech design innovations of Cocoon Fires, a company in Australia, even the smallest living space can now accommodate the glowing light of a fireplace. How? These sleek and stylish steel and enamel fireplaces suspend from the ceiling, leaving valuable floor space free.

These chic and functional products come from the imagination of Federico Otero, a celebrated industrial designer from Latin America. Clean and environmentally friendly (they run on ethanol), the smoke-free fireplace flames radiate warmth throughout the room. The black or stainless steel main body measures 24″ by 16″, and height can be adjusted to six different settings. They also have legs, in case you want to adapt them for use on the floor, but we think the hanging option is super cool, and makes them a design perfect solution for small spaces.

Meals on Wheels

Problem: You say you love to have guests for dinner but your apartment or condo doesn’t have a dining room? Solution: An expandable table that doubles as a food preparation surface.

Designer Phil Crook has come up with this ingenious space-saving, multi-functional piece of furniture. Chop veggies for your stir-fry at counter level in the kitchen, and then wheel the table into your designated dining space (say, the living room) and expand to create a wider, seat-level table. Voila! An instant dining surface made of wood with stylish folding metal legs.
